William Homer Tate, 95, of Meridianville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, reunited with his wife of 65 years, Jeanette.
Homer was a life-long member of Flint River Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and sang in the choir.
Homer was a lifetime farmer, beginning in 1948, growing row crops including cotton, corn, wheat, soybeans, and pumpkins. Tate Farms was designated as an Alabama Farm of Distinction and an Alabama Century Farm.
His accomplishments were many in the farming industry. Homer served on numerous boards and committees, including the Madison County Farmers Federation, Alabama Cotton Commission, National Cotton Council, USDA Cotton Board, and various other industry and community organizations. He was given a national award from the Cotton Grower Magazine called the Cotton Achievement Award and he was recently inducted into the Alabama Agriculture Hall of Honor.
Homer had many interests including serving on the Board of Trustees of Riverton Middle School and Buckhorn High School. He was an outstanding basketball player at Riverton High School and in the Huntsville Industrial League in the 1950’s.
He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Jeanette Neeley Tate and his parents, William Jefferson Tate & Carrie Ethel Patterson Tate and by his siblings: Judson Carl Tate, Mildred Louise Phillips, and Katie Ruth Brown.
Surviving family members include his sons: Mike Tate, Steve (Jackie) Tate, Mark (Markeyta) Tate, Jeff (Michele) Tate; His grandchildren: Kristen Tate, Sheree (Ronny) Mullins, Kasey (Stewart) McGill, Josh (Hope) Tate, Grant (Wendy) Tate, Miles (Hunter) Tate, Chase (Amanda) Tate, Meagan (Andrew) Hand, Hunter (Cyndle) Tate, Morgan (Cameron) Baker, and Madison (Jarrett) Swegles; 29 Great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 4th at Flint River Baptist Church from 9 am–11 am with the service at 11:00.
Burial following at the Flint River Cemetery.
