Alice Harris Jones

Alice Harris Jones, age 93, of Hazel Green, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at her home surrounded by family members.
Mrs. Jones, a native of Madison County, was raised in New Market and Mint Springs, Alabama. She attended New Market School and Walnut Grove School where she played basketball when the rules dictated females play half-court offense/defense with six players. Later in her adult life, Mrs. Jones attended Nursing classes through the Fayetteville Hospital in Tennessee.
Upon marrying Everett Jones in 1943, she moved to their farm where she lived for the remainder of her life.  Mr. and Mrs. Jones had four sons and they all farmed together for many years, raising both pigs and Angus cattle as well as producing row crops including cotton, soybeans and wheat. In the 1970s, Mrs. Jones was a member of the Tennessee Valley Cotton Wives, an organization promoting the manufacture and sales of cotton products.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was active for many years in the Fairview Presbyterian Church previously located in Northeast Madison County.
Mrs. Jones was an avid bowler for nearly 35 years at Pin Palace Lanes where she made many friends. Her team often won the season’s trophy partly due to Mrs. Jones’ bowling skills.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed hosting holiday meals for her large extended family as well as cooking large dinners for her farm family. She would load up an old renovated school bus with home-cooked meats, vegetables, bread, and desserts and then head to the fields where the men were planting/harvesting the crops. Everyone stopped their hard work long enough to enjoy a dinner break together as a family.  During “cotton picking time” Mrs. Jones went to the fields, pulled loaded cotton trailers to the cotton gin, and supervised the grandchildren “tromping” cotton to pack the wagons.
Mrs. Jones was a talented seamstress. In an addition to sewing clothing for herself, her sons, and grandchildren, she created quilts which she gifted to family members. Mrs. Jones cross-stitched many beautiful items including quilts, placemats, and tablecloths. She enjoyed gardening and preserving produce for her family. Mrs. Jones always had a large vegetable garden until her husband’s health no longer allowed it. Until recently, she made apple jelly for her family to enjoy with her famous lard biscuits. It wasn’t unusual for the grandchildren to race to get the last leftover biscuit before someone else got to it.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed woodworking, and even in her 80s, she constructed, painted, and custom decorated many corn hole board sets. The last few years, Mrs. Jones enjoyed stringing bead kits. She completed many “Tiger” kits to give family who are Auburn University students, alumni, and fans. She also gave differently themed kits to physicians and others whom she appreciated caring for her.
Mrs. Jones loved her role as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother.  She said many times, “I’ve had a good life and I have a good family.”
Mrs. Jones is survived by the following:  two sons and three daughters-in-law, Roger and Brenda Jones, Diane Jones, and Chris and Nancie Jones;
Her brother-in-law, Kenneth Jones and sisters-in-law, Patsy Jones and Iva Jones;
Her five grandsons: Jeff (Sheryl) Jones, Greg Jones, Bubba (Stacia) Jones, Joshua Jones, and Matthew (Traci) Jones;
Her six granddaughters: Kathy Jones (Kevin) Gilliam, Kristy Jones (Shannon) White, Kelley Jones (Greg) Braswell, Carol Ann Jones, Amber (Matt Todd) Jones, and Ana Jones;
Her seventeen great grandchildren: Hayden Jones, Lauren Kellum, Morgan Joiner, Logan Jones, Harley Jones, Dustin Hill, Luke Perry, Sydnee Harris, Zac Jones, Houston Jones, Ethan Jones, Emma Jones, Maggie Jones, Sloan White, Mary Alice White, Evan Jones, and Andi Ruth Jones;
Her six great, great grandchildren: Ellis Kay, Kinley Kate, Merritt Scott, Zane Wesley, Mabel Ruth, and Jasper Hugh; as well as nine nieces and two nephews.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Jones; two sons- Bobby L.  Jones and Miller L. Jones; her  former daughter-in-law, Linda Brooks Jones Hall; her parents- Perry and Jennie Mae (Norman) Harris; her four siblings and their spouses – Allion Harris, Estelle Keel, Mildred Williams, and Geneva Brown;  her in-laws, Beamon and  Ethel Jones, Virginia Sharp, and Charles Ray Jones;  one niece, Maria Brown; and one  nephew, George Perry Williams.
Due to COVID-19, a private family service, with her grandson Bubba Jones officiating, is planned with the burial in Taylor Cemetery.  Pall bearers are Dustin Hill and Jeff, Greg, Joshua, Matthew and Hayden Jones. Honorary pall bearers are Luke Perry and Zac, Ethan, Houston, and Evan Jones.
Memorials may be given to the Taylor Cemetery Fund or Hospice Family Care in lieu of flowers.
