Pastor Allan G. Ames, age 87, of Athens, Alabama went to be with the Lord the evening of Friday, August 12, 2016. He passed from his earthly home while surrounded by his wife and other loved ones.
Allan was born May 12, 1929 in Hartfield, New York, to Herbert and Edith Ames. He had one sister, Evelyn Hotchkiss; and two brothers, Maurice and Lloyd. He was the loving husband of Luella, his life-long partner that he married on August 22, 1952 in Brocton, New York.
He attended Bob Jones University, majoring in Pastoral Studies. He was ordained to the work of the Gospel ministry on July 13, 1956, and was called to be the pastor of Stockton Community Baptist Church. He subsequently served the Lord as the pastor of other churches throughout his life, including Ellery Center Baptist Church, and Panama Baptist Church, both in New York state; Bible Baptist Church, Grove City, Ohio; and Faith Baptist Church, Huntsville Alabama. Most recently, he pastored Lighthouse Baptist Church, Athens, Alabama for over twenty two years; serving until March 20, 2016.
Allan was a loving husband and father who enjoyed family and always tried to be an encouragement to family, friends and strangers. He was a man of many interests, and he always did everything with all his might. He faithfully studied the Scriptures daily, and was a man of prayer. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and a little hunting. In addition to pastoring, he also was a man that was good working with his hands. For many years, he was a licensed General Contractor, Electrician and Plumber. During his life he built homes, did electrical work for large commercial projects, farming, concrete construction and pumping, as well as swimming pool construction in Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee. Ames Pool & Construction Company operated for over 30 years, including a retail store, wholesale outlet, and the construction of over 300 in-ground and installation of over 350 above-ground pools.
Allan is preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Edith Ames, his brother Maurice, and his son Dale. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Luella; his sister Evelyn Hotchkiss of Dewittville, New York, his brother Lloyd of Painesville, Ohio; his children Donald and wife Debra; Diana Pettit and husband Rusty; Daniel and wife Diane; and David and wife Michelle; as well as 14 grandchildren, their spouses, and 22 great grandchildren. Grandchildren include Donald Ames Jr. and wife Anna, Danielle Kicher and husband Michael, Darci Metcalf and husband Mike, Dixon Ames and wife Katie, Mandi Wolfe and husband Stephen, Kari Hyman and husband Jason, Dawn Cano and husband Jonathan, Dana Ames, Daniel W. Ames, Amanda Miller and husband Matt, Olivia Ames, Emerson Ames, Dylan Ames and Bailey Ames. Great grandchildren include Ellie, Becca, Abbie and Tripp Ames; Katie, Allie, Sophie and Isabelle Kicher; Madi, Zeke and Dalan Metcalf; Levi and Jay Ames; Maddie, Aubrey and Alexis Wolfe; Marissa, Mollie, Jase and Jonas Hyman; and Dawson and Preston Cano.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, and funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 16th at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Greg McLaughlin and Pastor Doug McCurry officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Gardens immediately following the service.
