Brian Abbott Burris, longtime resident of Hazel Green, passed away in Huntsville Hospital Cardiovascular Care Unit surrounded by his daughters on July 31, 2019. Brian was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in the early 2000’s, but continued to live a very full life until his final weeks. Brian was born February 21, 1959 in Biloxi, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents (Emmett Burris & Kathleen Burris), as well as his step-mother (Beth Hovius), and his loving wife of 25 years, Joy Burris.
Brian grew up in Vicksburg, MS - the youngest of 4 boys. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1981 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. As a young man just out of college, he was faced with a life threatening cancer that took part of his physical mobility. After recovering, he moved to Huntsville, where he worked at Boeing and then later at Simulation Technologies. In Huntsville, he met and married his wife Joy, and shortly after, they moved to Hazel Green. After her death in 2015, he retired to life on Lake Guntersville in Langston, AL.
Brian enjoyed card games, golfing, and working on projects around the house, but Brian spent his retirement years enjoying his favorite pastime of fishing at his residence in Langston, AL. Brian was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his courage in the face of numerous physical limitations, and his deep love of family and friends. Brian is survived by his 3 children - Daniel Hudson, 38, of Opelika, AL, Anna (Alan) Roach, 37, of Nashville, TN, Katie (Will) Temmen, 29, of Huntsville, AL, his grandchildren Margaret Joy, 5, and Samuel Edward, 2 ½, of Nashville, TN, his 3 older brothers - Jerry (Becky), Steve (Donna), Pat (Jamie) and their respective families.
The family will receive friends at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Friday, August 2 from 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 3 at Hazel Green United Methodist Church. Brian will be laid to rest at Concord Cemetery in New Market next to his late wife, Joy.
