Jessie Nolan Wilburn, affectionately known as "Jip," passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 10, 1942, in Lick Skillet, Alabama, he was the son of the late Burl and Beatrice Wilburn.
Jip is survived by his devoted wife, Ann Richardson Wilburn. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 27, 2025. He is also survived by his son, Teddy Ray (Mary Jane) Wilburn, and daughter, Shelia Wilburn Long; his siblings, Bettie Whaley and Earl Wilburn of Lick Skillet; grandchildren, Timothy (Kim) Wilburn, Brooke (Tawni) Wilburn, Whitney Long, and Jordan Long; and four great-grandchildren. Jip was blessed with many loving nieces and nephews and is also survived by his lifelong friend, Harvey "Buster" Greenway.
In addition to his parents "Jip" was preceded in death by his siblings, Burl Wilburn Jr., Houston Wilburn, Christine Flynt, Bill Wilburn, Edward Wilburn, and Jimmy Wilburn.
For 31 years, Jip dedicated himself to the Huntsville Fire Department, serving as a firefighter, driver, and captain. His unwavering commitment to his work left a lasting impression on his colleagues and the community. His strong work ethic was evident in every aspect of his life, but it was his deep devotion to his family that truly defined him.
Jip cherished the time spent with his son, Teddy Ray, bonding over hunting, fishing, baling hay, and carpentry projects. His daughter, Shelia, was his "baby girl" and lovingly cared for him until the very end. He was known for his strength, determination, and just the right amount of stubbornness—traits that were warmly embraced by all who knew him. Above all, Jip’s love for his family was unconditional, and he always placed their happiness above everything else.
Jip was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1960 to 1963.
Family and friends will gather to honor his life at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The family will receive visitors from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with funeral services, with full Firefighter honors, beginning at 3:00 PM. Pastor Lon Ostrzycki will officiate.
Jip’s legacy of love, dedication, and strength will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
