Joeena Lorriane Hudson McGriff, 73, of New Market, Alabama, passed away peacefully
at home on December 10, 2022.
Joeena was a 1968 graduate of Hazel Green High School, where she was a member of
the drill team. She married Lamar McGriff on May 25, 1968 at Union Grove Baptist
Church. After raising their children to school age, she entered the workforce at
Cheeseborough Ponds, a cosmetics and perfume company. Later, she worked at Agape
Manor, an assisted living facility, where she enjoyed helping care for the residents.
Joeena “retired” to do the “job” she loved most, providing daily childcare for her first
two grandchildren.
Joeena was an avid gardener with a spring and summer yard that abounded with
flowers. Her green thumb ensured a home filled with lovely plants. She loved classic
movies, especially musicals and Elvis movies. To say that Joeena was an Elvis “fan”
would be an understatement. A life-long cat lover, her many special kitties included
Reddy, Prissy, Miss Kitty, Whiteface, and Dilly.
Joeena is preceded in death by her mother, Doris Green Whiteley; her stepfather, Albert
Whiteley; biological father, Joe Hudson; nephew Johnny Hudson, and son-in-law, Ted
Colby.
Joeena is survived by her husband of 53 years Lamar McGriff, daughter Leah McGriff
Colby Miller (Lyle) of Savannah, Georgia, son Glen Alan McGriff (Jana) of Meridianville,
Alabama, brother Steve Hudson (Fay) of New Market; and grandchildren Kaylie McGriff,
Will McGriff, Lauren Colby, and Ethan Colby. She is also survived by her niece Beth
Hudson Squier and her daughters, Sophie Squier and Noelle Squier; niece Kerri Hudson
Smith and her children Laura Bratcher and Charlie Bratcher, and Johnny’s daughter Riley
Hudson Landers.
Visitation with the family will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12,
2022. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at
Hazel Green Funeral Home with the Reverend David Hutto of First Baptist Church of
Meridianville officiating. Burial will follow at Prosperity Cemetery in Taft, Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be Glen Alan McGriff, Steve Hudson, Will McGriff, Ethan Colby, Tom
Taylor, and Jay Moore. Arrangements are made by Hazel Green Funeral Home.
Joeena’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Neely’s Chapel Baptist for the
congregation’s pastoral love and flexibility, especially during these recent months of
illness. Thanks also to First Baptist Church of Meridianville for their outpouring of love
and support. We also appreciate the compassionate care provided by enhabit Home
Health (especially Alan, the physical therapist and Morgan, the occupational therapist)
and Hospice of North Alabama.
Memorials may be given to Neeley’s Chapel, 951 Beth Road, New Market, Alabama 35761.
Hazel Green Funeral Home is honored to serve the family
