Retired SSG John Pelkey of Toney, 66, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, awarded for meritorious service in a combat zone. He also retired as a Civil Service employee at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar A. Pelkey and Virginia C. Sandvick, and his loving wife and soulmate, Theresa Pelkey. John is survived by his daughter, Lori Taylor, and her husband, Nathan; daughter, Melissa Adair, and her husband, Ronnie; grandsons, Adam Adair, Collin Mundy and Austin Adair; sister, Judy Patton; brother, Michael Pelkey, and his wife, Jane; brother, Thomas Pelkey, and his wife, Sherry; sister, Robin McKillop; brother-in-law, Jack Romans, and his wife, Hilda; special family member, Helen Hottle, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr Pelkey served 20 years of active military service for our country.  He was a Veteran of Vietnam and Desert Shield/Storm as well as many undisclosed missions.  Those who knew John shared that he was kind but stern, honorable, a great provider, hard working and would never ask anyone to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself.  He was selfless and devoted to his family, always putting others before himself.  He loved to read, spend time with his family and play Risk. He will always remain in our hearts, and though he may be gone, he will never be forgotten.

There will be a small private family service on Sunday, January 20th. The family would like to express their gratitude to Compassus Hospice for the care that they provided to our father, grandfather, brother and friend.  We are forever thankful and appreciative for the kindness and compassion you showed for our hero and loved one.

We ask that in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in his name to Compassus, his hospice care provider.
