“Lena Ruth Turner Poole passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2021 in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 86.
Lena was born in Haleyville, Alabama on January 9th, 1935 to her parents Roy B. Turner and Jewel Leigh (Murner) Turner-Hand. Her family moved to Russellville when she was a young girl. Lena graduated from Russellville High School in 1953. Following high school, Lena attended the Business College of Florence then moved to Huntsville, Alabama where she began working at Redstone Arsenal. There she met her husband Donald Dunn Poole of Arlington, Virginia. Throughout the years, Lena continued to work in various secretarial positions for the United States government.
Don and Lena married in January of 1957 and had four children. Roy Hugh Poole, Stephen Dunn Poole, Timothy Colvin Poole, and Jewelya Elizabeth Poole-Mercer. Over the course of Don’s career, their family resided in Alabama, New York City, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Lena returned to the Huntsville area and settled in Hazel Green, Alabama in 2012.
Lena was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was full of life and always brought joy and laughter to every room she entered. Lena had a gift of generosity. Her benevolence touched many lives over the years. Every year Lena attended her Russellville High School class reunion with great excitement. Lena was involved in her local church and various community activities. She loved and was thankful for those in her Sunday School class and her Small Group of Hazel Green United Methodist Church.
Lena is preceded in death by her parents, Roy B. Turner and Jewel Leigh Turner-Hand of Russellville, Alabama and her son, Stephen Dunn Poole of Hazel Green.
Lena is survived by her brother, William Hugh Turner and his wife Vera of Hazel Green, Alabama. Her son Roy, 63, and his wife Gayle of Knoxville, Tennessee. Her daughter-in-law Melodie Poole of Hazel Green, Alabama. Her son Timothy, 55, and his wife Cindy of Portland, Oregon, and her daughter Jewelya, 52, of Helena, Montana. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren, Chad, Sarah, Jeremy, Anna, Tyler, Isaac, Joshua, Jared, Jonah, Mandy, Ruth, Joseph and Rachel as well as her 14 great-grandchildren.
Lena’s Celebration of Life services will be held at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Saturday, April 17th. Visitation with Lena’s family will be held from 9:30 AM until 11 AM and a Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11 AM. Interment will follow at 3 PM in Haleyville, Alabama.”
