Melissa Kaye Swift Mooney of New Market passed away on Friday. She was 57 and had lived her life in the Walnut Grove community of Madison County. She attended Walnut Grove School and then graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1984 before attending the North Alabama College of Commerce where she earned a certificate in accounting. Melissa loved her work and was a dedicated employee of H.T. Hackney Company where she worked for more than 28 years.
Upon first meeting her, Melissa was a shy person but quickly became bubbly and friendly because of her love for everyone around her. She had a special love for animals and was a fostering volunteer for the SNAP program where she also helped raise funds for the care of animals. She loved gardening, flowers, was a good cook, and she loved to travel.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Exie B. Swift, her uncle, Max M. Swift, and by her special great-aunt, Nellie Florence Andrews.
Surviving family members include her beloved mother, Peggy Swift; Her uncle, Joe Swift and his spouse, Michael; Her aunt, Imogene Reese; Her cousin, Fred Alan Reese and his wife, Cami. She is also survived by her extended family and by her work family - all of whom she dearly loved.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Sunday from 2pm until 4pm. Afterward, burial will follow in Concord Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rex Stewart, Bob Neighbors, Mike McKinney, Derrill Moore, David Jacoby,
and Victor Moody.
Melissa will be remembered for her love for animals and her support for pet-related causes, for her grace, kindness, and her love and devotion to her mother.
