James Frederick "Jim" Taylor Jr. of Athens, Alabama passed away on Thursday. He was 85. Mr. Taylor was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to the late James Frederick "Fred" Taylor Sr and Esta Jacqueline Morris Taylor, both formerly of Chilhowie, VA. He served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.

Before retirement, he worked in the aerospace and hydraulics industries. His aerospace work included the design and building of the prototype for the lunar module fenders as well as design work on the Saturn V swing arms. Later, he designed one-of-a-kind hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for various industries. He was a gifted carpenter and looked forward to wood-working projects such as building furniture and other things for his family. Neighbors were always welcome in his shop or garage. He enjoyed fishing and was a good father.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Mary Martha "Marty" Scott Taylor of Athens, Al, originally of Kansas City, MO; two children, James Frederick Taylor III and his wife, Stephanie of Hazel Green, Al and Nancy Taylor Brown and her husband, Mike, of Harvest, Alabama. One grandson, Carl Rex Rogers Jr. and one great-grandson Rex James Sekol, both of Arizona.

Per the wishes of Mr. Taylor, the family has planned a private family celebration of life and interment at Valhalla Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, meals, etc, donations may be made to veteran support groups, The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, or to the American Heart Association.
