Nels Johnson, 83, of Gurley, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday from a local hospital. He loved his family and his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild were the light of his life.

He was born and raised in Bliss, New York and graduated from the Buffalo State Teacher's College in Buffalo, New York. Upon finishing college, he came to Huntsville in 1950 while serving in the United States Army. After a two year enlistment, he worked as an instructor in the Army Ordnance Guided Missile School for 33 years until his retirement in 1985.

While Nels served in the Army in Huntsville, he began attending church at Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church where he would meet his future wife, Dorothy Phillips. Over the years, Nels and Dorothy were faithful members of Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church, Heritage Baptist Church, and Locust Grove Baptist Church. He was a devoted follower of Christ and served his churches in many capacities throughout his life including deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and was willing to meet any other need that he was aware of.

Nels is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Phillips Johnson; his children, Rhonda Carden and friend Rob Buyher, Annita (Talley) Fanning, and Kevin (Pat) Johnson; his grandchildren, Bethany (Bruce) Alexander, Jonathan (Jenna) Fanning, Philip Carden, Joshua (Mariah) Fanning, and Jacob Fanning and girlfriend Tiffany Walpole; and one great-grandson, Jarrett Fanning.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Ephraim Nicholas Johnson and Lucy Joybell Wilson Johnson; He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Hughie, Gordon, and Robert Johnson.

The family will receive friends at Locust Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, January 19th from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Locust Grove Baptist Church on Monday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Robert White Jr. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Jubilee Missions Fund at Locust Grove Baptist Church; 171 County Lake Road; New Market, AL 35761, or a charity of your choice.
