Mr. Shelby Huey, resident of Huntsville, Alabama, departed this life on Saturday, October 6, 2018, in the comfort of his home at the age of 72. He was born in Pennington, Arkansas on Friday, February 22, 1946, the son of Mr. Raymond Huey and Mrs. Elsie (Campbell) Huey-Birdsong.
In May 1964, Mr. Huey graduated from Grubbs High School, and in August of the same year, he enlisted in the United States Army. Shelby went to Fort Benning for Jump School. Following Jump School, he was assigned to 173rd ABN Brigade, and they were deployed to Vietnam in May 1965. Following several tours in Vietnam and countless firefights, Mr. Huey was honorably discharged from the Army in 1974. He was awarded the Gallantry Cross with Silver Star by the Vietnamese Government, and the United States awarded Mr. Huey with the nation’s third highest valor award, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. In 1999 he was inducted into the Madison County, Alabama Military Heritage Commission Hall of Heroes.
On September 21, 1987, Shelby and Hollis Preston were united in marriage. Together, they enjoyed many years of hunting antiques, and auctioning them. Mr. Huey also enjoyed fishing. He was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Huey was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wayne Huey; and a sister, Marcia Ann Huey.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Hollis Huey, of the home; four sons, Chris Huey and wife, Jennifer, David Huey, Troy Butler, all of Huntsville, Alabama, and Patrick Huey of Cherry Valley, Arkansas; two daughters, Cassie Huey-Carter and husband, Michael, of Paragould, Arkansas, and Nika McCool and husband, Matthew, of Calhoun, Tennessee; a brother, Ronnie Huey; a sister, Connie Bowen; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Committal services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, in Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at Birdeye, Arkansas, with Mr. David Howard officiating.
